Our Mission

We seek not only to preserve the physical relics of an earlier time; our greater mission is to instill in the community—regionally, nationally and internationally—a greater knowledge and appreciation for the history and culture of the people of Southern Appalachia.

About Us

The Museum of Appalachia is a living history village with some three dozen historic log structures, two large exhibit buildings filled with authentic Appalachian artifacts and their stories, hand-tilled gardens and a variety of farm animals.  Set in a picturesque landscape encircled with hand-split cedar rail fences, it features the most comprehensive collection of Appalachian artifacts anywhere. Founded in 1969, it converted to a 501(c)3 in 2003 to ensure long-term sustainability. Today the Museum continues a limited program of growth, concentrating on the maintenance of its massive collections, educational programs designed to enhance its mission, and informing and entertaining visitors while 'preserving the past for the future'.
