Volunteer: Hospice Veteran Volunteer

Morristown/Lakeway, TN Area - Serves Cocke, Jefferson, Grainger, Hancock, Claiborne, Hawkins & Hamblen Counties.

Did you serve honorably in one of our branches of the military, have a little extra time and interested in giving back? THEN WE WANT YOU! We are in need of Veteran Volunteers to work with Veterans who are on our hospice services. We are a partner with the We Honor Veterans Program (Veteran to Veteran) and we took an oath that we would make sure our Veterans die with dignity and not alone. We are holding up our end of that bargain.

However, we've found they need more than just our services, they need their brothers and sisters that they have that special connection with to be with them through this journey. Veterans have a bond with each other like no other - not like a spouse, sibling or a child. We already have several Veteran Volunteers but we keep them busy. We need more! We are looking for Veterans that have the time to make visits, calls, write letters, send cards, run errands, provide respite, etc. Their families need your support too.

So, have we pulled at your heart strings yet? If so, let's hear from you. We are located in Morristown but we serve seven counties - Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Hawkins, Claiborne, Hancock, & Jefferson. We will meet with you, take your application, get that back ground check done and the training over with. Our Veterans are so near and dear to our hearts..... they need you. Look forward to hearing from each of you!

Volunteer: SCHAS Out Shopping (S.O.S.) Order Taker

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, SCHAS has created the S.O.S Program to provide grocery delivery services to those who have compromised immune systems or are age 60 or older.

Volunteers are needed to take phone orders for seniors in this program.

What is involved?

To be an order taker, reliable phone and access to the Internet are required as all orders are placed online on our website. Hours of operation are Monday-Friday 8am-4pm. Volunteers simply email us to let us know when they are available to take orders and again once finished for the day. We have a phone list at our reception desk to transfer calls. SOS-ers can place orders Monday-Friday between the hours of 8am-4pm by going online to our website or calling our main administrative line at 865-523-2920. Phone orders are transferred from the main office to those available to take Orders.  Order takers email our reception team when they are “logged” in to take orders and then when they “log” out for the day.  The orders are transferred to the Order taker so they will see SCHAS appear on their phone, so they know it’s an order call. The order taker will then go onto our website to take the order and then submit.

All volunteers receive training prior to taking orders.

Volunteer: Gardening and Grounds Beautification

With 7.5 acres of greenspace atop Mabry's Hill and a single staff member, volunteers provide vital in maintaining and beautifying our historic site. Mabry-Hazen House sits at the center of a level 1 arboretum, and green thumbs are necessary to take care of the diverse flora. There are two primary opportunities to volunteer with our grounds:

Groundskeeping - Tasks like bed care, grounds maintenance, bush pruning and weeding are typical. This year we aim to expand the accessibility of natural resources because we have been included on the Dogwood Arts’s Trail. The major project of reclaiming the dogwood grove on the east end of the property will require the help of our groundskeeping volunteers, and will involve brush removal among other tasks. We also have numerous flower beds around the site and  Gardening - During the Spring and Summer month, Mabry-Hazen House cultivates a kitchen garden of herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, and other vegetables. Volunteers may help maintain and care for the garden as well as grow their own plants.

Interested in sponsoring a bed? Reach out to learn how you can become a member of Mabry's Hill Garden Club!

Volunteer: Help Us Shop for Groceries for an Arriving Refugee Family

Have you ever wished you could make a difference just by running your daily errands?

Our mission is to provide opportunities for refugees to rebuild their lives after suffering persecution so that they may become productive, contributing members of the community. Bridge Refugee Services is expecting to welcome a record number of refugees to Knoxville this year, and we cannot do this without community support.

We would love to have volunteers help us shop for culturally appropriate groceries.  We will give you grocery gift cards (you don't have to use your own money!) and a culturally appropriate grocery list for the family you are shopping for; you help us by going to a local Walmart or other grocery store and shopping for the items on the list and return the groceries to our office. This volunteer opportunity is very flexible with busy schedules!

Help us give a refugee family a head start in their new city by providing nourishing food.

Volunteer Requirements:

Complete Bridge Volunteer Paperwork Attend Bridge Volunteer Orientation (about 1hr via Zoom) Background Check through Sterling Volunteers ($17.50 per person paid to Sterling Volunteers)

Foreign language skills or experience working with refugee populations not required.

If you have any additional questions, please reach out to Peter Green, our Volunteer & Co-Sponsorship Manager, via email at pgreen@bridgerefugees.org.

Volunteer: Help Us Pick Up Community Food Donations!

Bridge Refugee Services, Inc.'s mission is to provide opportunities for refugees to rebuild their lives after suffering persecution so that they may become productive, contributing members of the community. Bridge Refugee Services offers support to over 400 refugee clients in the greater Knox Co. area, and we cannot do this without community support.

Through Second Harvest's Food Rescue Program, we have been able to create partnerships with local ethnic grocery stores and restaurants around Knoxville to combat food insecurity in the refugee community.  We would love to have volunteers help us pick up food donations from these stores and restaurants each week.  We will give you a location or locations to pick up from and you will represent Bridge as you drive to these locations to interact with store employees and pick up these donations.  Then bring these donations back to our office to help us weigh and record the donation.  Vehicles that can haul large donations are preferred, but may not be required.  This volunteer opportunity is a weekly opportunity with some flexibility.

Help us provide our refugee families culturally familiar, nourishing food!

Volunteer: Warehouse Product Recovery: March 26

Our volunteers work out of our Maryville warehouse in the Product Recovery area or our Repack Clean Room where we process donated and bulk food for distribution, to help feed our East Tennessee neighbors.

Volunteers also help in non-food project support roles such as cleaning, letter stuffing, and miscellaneous admin duties.

No experience necessary! Training will be provided on-site at the beginning of the shift.

*Volunteers must be at least 10 years of age, and anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
** Please note, for groups that have minors ages 10-15 among the participants, we require a 1:5 chaperone to minor ratio. Please ensure that your group size matches this ratio with adult chaperones (18+) and minors.

Please park in the rear parking lot through the metal gate as parking in the front is limited. Volunteers enter through the double glass doors by the rear lot into our volunteer lobby.

Our Location:

Second Harvest Food Bank of East TN

136 Harvest Lane

Maryville, TN 37801

Teacher Supply Depot is changing its floor plan and needs help setting up the new store. Volunteers will be asked to move and unpack boxes, place supplies on shelves, and break down boxes. We have dollies and carts, but some light lifting may be necessary.

We are located at 709 N Cedar Bluff Rd, attached to Cedar Bluff Pre-K. Your GPS will take you to the pre-k entrance where you will see a playground; instead, go down to the last entrance coming from the interstate. You will see the Teacher Supply Depot sign on the side of the building. There is parking in a small lot at the depot, but if it is full, you may park in the grass alongside the road.

Ring the bell when you arrive to be let in.

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes and shoes.
