Volunteer: Norris Watershed Hike

The Norris Municipal Watershed, situated adjacent to Norris Dam State Park, is a 2,300-acre area that is the watershed of Clear Creek; it is managed for water quality protection, sustainable forest management, and public recreation. A network of about 30 miles of forest roads and single-track trails are managed by the Norris Watershed Board.

For this hike, we will meet in front of Norris Middle School at 9 a.m. After a short stroll across the commons through downtown Norris, by the elementary school, we will take Deer Ridge Trail to Observation Point Trail. We’ll then walk a short distance to Observation Point, where we will have views of Norris Dam and the Cumberland Mountains in the distance. Back down the hill from Observation Point we’ll take Eagle Trail, much of which was constructed by the CCC in the mid-30s. This trail parallels the Clinch River before climbing up to the city.

A short walk on Hickory Trail Road will lead to a trail that goes to Eric Harrold Park; then we’ll walk down past the town center and back to the starting point. The hike, which passes through some nice old forest, is about 4 miles with some uphill sections.

Volunteer: Fall Cedar Barrens Cleanup/ Weed Wrangle®

The Oak Ridge Cedar Barrens will again be the site of exotic invasive plant removal as we conduct our fall cleanup, our third and final cleanup of the barrens this year. Located next to Jefferson Middle School in Oak Ridge, the Cedar Barrens is a joint project of the City of Oak Ridge, State Natural Areas Division, and TCWP. The area is one of just a few cedar barrens in East Tennessee, and is subject to invasion by bushy lespedeza, leatherleaf viburnum, privet, autumn olive, mimosa, Nepal grass, multiflora rose, and many native woody plants that threaten the prairie community. Our efforts help to eliminate invasives and other shade-producing plants that prevent the prairie plants from getting much-needed sunlight, nutrients, and water.

Volunteers should meet in the Jefferson Middle School Parking lot at 9 a.m., with sturdy shoes, loppers, gloves, and water.  We will also have some Uprooters, loppers, and gloves to share. The work session will conclude at noon with a free pizza lunch for volunteers.

About TCWP

For over one half of a century Tennessee Citizens for Wilderness Planning (TCWP) has worked tirelessly to protect and preserve our natural lands and waters in 13 Tennessee counties. It was the work of TCWP that stopped a transmountain road from being constructed that would have bisected the Smokey Mountains, TCWP that stopped TVA from constructing a dam on the OBED River and the work of TCWP that led to the Obed River becoming the only National Wild & Scenic River in Tennessee. It was the work of TCWP that led to the federal designation of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area.

The TCWP mission is to preserve wild places and waters through protection, advocacy, stewardship, and education.  TCWP has a long history of sounding the alarm, alerting citizens to threats to our wild areas, and inviting citizens to join us in taking action to mitigate and ultimately end those threats.  TCWP takes an active role in promoting equitable, science-based decisions related to land and resource use.

TCWP conducts stewardship days to remove invasive plants at 9 stewardship areas, engaging hundreds of volunteers each year, hosts hikes providing botany education and presents programing on a variety of topics relevant to our wild lands and waters.  TCWP has just launched the Explore and Restore program to alleviate “nature deficit disorder” in our children, providing outdoor youth education programs to age groups ranging from sixth grade to college.

Volunteer: Help Displaced Families Find Each Other Again - Knox, TN

Every day, war, disaster, and migration tear families apart.

Mothers lose touch with sons. Brothers don’t know if their sisters are safe. Children grow up wondering if they will ever see their parents again.

Through the Restoring Family Links program, the American Red Cross helps reunite families by tracing missing relatives, delivering messages across borders, and verifying the safety of loved ones in crisis zones.

But many people who need this service have never heard of it.

That’s where you can make a difference.

By simply sharing information about Restoring Family Links, in your community, workplace, or faith group, you could help someone discover the lifeline they’ve been searching for. A simple conversation, a flyer, or a post on social media can be the first step toward bringing families back together.

Your voice could be the reason a family is whole again. Learn how you can help spread the word: www.redcross.org/volunteer

Volunteer: Help Us Pick Up Community Food Donations!

Our mission is to provide opportunities for refugees to rebuild their lives after suffering persecution so that they may become productive, contributing members of the community. Bridge Refugee Services offers support to over 400 refugee clients in the greater Knox Co. area, and we cannot do this without community support.

Through Second Harvest's Food Rescue Program, we have been able to create partnerships with local ethnic grocery stores and restaurants around Knoxville to combat food insecurity in the refugee community.  We would love to have volunteers help us pick up food donations from these stores and restaurants each week.  We will give you a location or locations to pick up from and you will represent Bridge as you drive to these locations to interact with store employees and pick up these donations.  Then bring these donations back to our office to help us weigh and record the donation.  Vehicles that can haul large donations are preferred, but may not be required.  This volunteer opportunity is a weekly opportunity with some flexibility.

Help us provide our refugee families culturally familiar, nourishing food!

Volunteer Requirements:

Complete Bridge Volunteer Paperwork Attend Bridge Volunteer Orientation (about 1hr via Zoom) Background Check through Sterling Volunteers ($17.50 per person paid to Sterling Volunteers)

Foreign language skills or experience working with refugee populations not required.

If you have any additional questions, please reach out to Peter Green, our Volunteer & Co-Sponsorship Manager, via email at pgreen@bridgerefugees.org.

Volunteer: Read to Pets!

Reading Team volunteers assist us in mentally engaging our animals. This helps them to become more adoptable while living in a shelter environment! When working with the animals in the reading team, you will not be handling them physically, but will instead be challenging them to listen to your words. You can read a book, do your homework, or quietly play them an instrument!

Volunteers must be under the age of 16 and accompanied by an adult at all times.

Volunteer: Beaumont Magnet Academy Food Bag Pick Up

Beaumont Magnet Academy provides weekly food bags for students who need food support over the weekends.  These bags contain easy to make food and snacks, as well as fresh produce ensuring that kids have food when school is not in session.  Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church packs the nonperishable items from Second Harvest for us.  Beardsley Farm and the Rotary Club of Knoxville add the fresh produce to the bags 1-2 times a month.

To make this process work, we need help!  We need volunteers to transport our food bags from Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church to Beaumont Magnet Academy or to Beardsley Farm on the weeks they will be adding produce.

Volunteers will pick up the food bags in the morning and drop them off at BMA or Beardsley Farm depending on the week.  We usually have approximately 100 to 130 bags.  Rolling bins are available to move items to and from your vehicle at each location.

I will reach out to you to let you know if you will be delivering to the school or to Beardsley Farm.  Dates for Beardsley Farm will be confirmed by beginning of September.  First Beardsley Farm date is 9/18.

Thank you for your support!
