Museum of Appalachia, Norris Tennessee – Annual Fall Heritage Days on Thursday & Friday, October 22 & 23, and the following week, Thursday & Friday, October 29 & 30, from 9:00am to 3:00pm.
The Museum's signature educational program includes demonstrations where things are made by hand—corn shuck and apple head dolls, brooms, baskets, butter, fiber arts, powder horns, rugs, soap, lard, and barrels. Blacksmiths, coopers, and woodworkers will showcase their craft, while demonstrations of rail splitting and beekeeping highlight the skills that sustained early Appalachian communities. Traditional musicians and dancers will will add to the atmosphere. Students can also try their hand at interactive activities designed to bring Appalachian history to life. From crosscut sawing and quill-pen writing to spelling bees, candle dipping, and classic games, these experiences offer engaging ways to learn about the daily lives of early settlers. Other highlights include storytelling, folklore and colonial history presentations, old-fashioned schoolhouse lessons, Appalachian music, circle dancing, shape-note singing, and animal encounters. We need volunteers to help make this program a truly memorable experience for children! Shifts are available, or work an entire day, 8:30am to 3:00 with lunch provided!
