Reading Team volunteers assist us in mentally engaging our animals. This helps them to become more adoptable while living in a shelter environment! When working with the animals in the reading team, you will not be handling them physically, but will instead be challenging them to listen to your words. You can read a book, do your homework, or quietly play them an instrument!

Volunteers must be under the age of 16 and accompanied by an adult at all times.

Volunteer: Beaumont Magnet Academy Food Bag Pick Up

Beaumont Magnet Academy provides weekly food bags for students who need food support over the weekends.  These bags contain easy to make food and snacks, as well as fresh produce ensuring that kids have food when school is not in session.  Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church packs the nonperishable items from Second Harvest for us.  Beardsley Farm and the Rotary Club of Knoxville add the fresh produce to the bags 1-2 times a month.

To make this process work, we need help!  We need volunteers to transport our food bags from Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church to Beaumont Magnet Academy or to Beardsley Farm on the weeks they will be adding produce.

Volunteers will pick up the food bags in the morning and drop them off at BMA or Beardsley Farm depending on the week.  We usually have approximately 100 to 130 bags.  Rolling bins are available to move items to and from your vehicle at each location.

Choose When You Tutor One Hour, Twice a Week

The STEMx Tutors program is designed for busy professionals like you. As a STEMx Tutor, you commit to tutoring one hour, twice a week. EnCorps utilizes both small group and 1:1 tutoring. 


As a small group tutor, tutoring sessions take place for one hour, at the same time, twice a week between 12:00 - 5:30 p.m. PST. In turn, as a 1:1 tutor, you will determine the day and time of your virtual tutoring sessions with your student


We ask that you commit to tutoring for a minimum of one semester with the option to renew. Many of our tutors have been in the program for four years.


EnCorps Support

EnCorps provides its volunteer tutors with training and support. Your dedicated Program Manager will provide you access to our Google Classroom where you will find a plethora of resources, invite you to online seminars, and offer the option to join our annual Learning Summit where you can network with other tutors as well as STEM professional who are exploring STEM teaching through the EnCorps STEM Teachers program.

Are you excited about technology, engineering, or coding? Whittle Springs Middle School is launching a Robotics Club, and we’re looking for a volunteer who’s ready to inspire the next generation of tech innovators!

As the Robotics Club Sponsor, you will:

Design and lead engaging, age-appropriate STEM curriculum for middle school students (fall & spring semesters)

Teach foundational concepts in robotics, coding, and engineering using hands-on projects

What You’ll Do:

Who Can Volunteer:

- Anyone 15 years or older—yes, high school students can mentor too! Our structured school-based program is designed specifically for younger mentors.
- Adults 23 years or older can choose between school-based or community-based mentoring, offering flexibility to match their schedules.
- The commitment is just 4-6 hours per month for at least one year.
- No prior mentoring experience is needed—just a passion for making a difference and helping children succeed!

Ever wanted to spend a day on the town with a sweet dog? Doggie Day Trips allow you to do just that! Take a shelter dog to hang out with you at a park, go for a hike, see the sites downtown, or whatever suits your fancy! ​​ Dogs enjoy quality time, exercise and socialization outside of the shelter You’ll have a great time too! There is no commitment beyond simply spending the day together and having fun Participants must be at least 18 years old Dog must remain on leash, held by an adult, at all times Dog must be kept separate from personal pets and other dogs you encounter while out and about You will be provided with a harness, leash, and other necessary supplies for your Doggie Day Trip upon arrival at the shelter. One of our missions at Bridge Refugee Services is to provide safe, affordable, and furnished housing for our arriving refugee families.  We are largely dependent upon in-kind donations of gently used furniture from the community to set up a new home for our refugee families.  Sadly, we are missing out on a lot of donations because our organization is unable to do furniture pick-ups.  

We are looking for hero volunteers with weekday availability and vehicles that can transport couches, loveseats, dressers, dining tables, nightstands, end tables, and other basic types of furniture!  


Furniture pick-ups will generally happen on an as-needed basis usually during Bridge office hours, 8:30-5:30 M-F, and furniture will need to be transported to our off-site storage unit on Western Ave.

We are launching a brand-new initiative this year to create sustainability and efficiency in our donations process, and charitable groups can help us by donating various housing kits.  Your group can look through our brand new BRS Housing Kit Guide and pick a housing kit that speaks to your group, and then put together as many kits as you are able to.  We do accept some items as gently used, like dishes, flatware, pots, and pans; but other items like bedding, towels, toiletries, etc. would need to be new.

If you cannot commit to a whole kit, you can still donate any item(s) from this guide to support welcoming refugees to the Knoxville area!  Even if you wanted to just collect new pillows or umbrellas (or school supplies, which are not in the Housing Kit Guide), this would be a huge help!  Large groups collecting donations for us really help us meet the material needs of our refugee families.  If this is something you or your group would like to do, I can point you in the right direction as far as current needs go.

One of our roles as Knoxville's only refugee resettlement agency is to find affordable housing for our arriving refugee families. This task comes with unique challenges. One of these unique challenges is the rental agreements and city ordinances that require our refugee families to take care of the yard of their rental property.

We receive a lot of refugee families--many of whom are single mother with young children--who:

Have no cultural knowledge of how to use a lawn mower or do yard work, Do not have the necessary equipment to do yard work, and Have young children and cannot leave these children alone to get out in the yard for an hour or so to do the yard work.

There are opportunities in the Spring, Summer, and early Fall months for volunteers to help us meet the yard work needs of our refugee families and single mothers. This is also a great opportunity for groups that can serve refugee families through cutting grass, pulling weeds, raking leaves, and general yard clean-up.

Special Requirement: The volunteer would need to be able to provide their own lawn equipment and get it to and from the property, since the families do not own any equipment.

Volunteer: New Life Men's Program Electives Volunteer

Purpose/Overview:  KARM is focused on providing multiple opportunities for our guests to obtain their goals related to movement out of homelessness and away from the events that brought them to KARM.  Many of our programs are designed with courses of study to assist in this process.  Elective classes are designed to allow the New Life men time to unwind and learn about healthy and fun activities outside of KARM’s doors.

Purpose/Overview:  KARM is focused on providing multiple opportunities for our guests to obtain their goals related to movement out of homelessness and away from the events that brought them to KARM.  Many of our programs are designed with courses of study to assist in this process.  Elective classes are designed to allow the New Life men time to unwind and learn about healthy and fun activities outside of KARM’s doors.

Purpose/OverviewKARM is focused on providing multiple opportunities for our residents to obtain their goals related to movement out of homelessness and away from the events that brought them to KARM.  It is vital for our New Life Program residents to attend necessary off-site appointments to continue on their path of transformation.  Our volunteer transporters are there to transport residents to and from appointments, providing a safe, nurturing, and reliable environment for them while they’re out in the community. 

Responsibilities:                                                              

Provide a secure, caring environment for residents while they are out in the community at appointments Reinforce a message of hope, encouragement, and motivation Transport residents to appointments, to pick up medications, and to other pre-approved destinations Pick up and/or drop off prescriptions as needed Mobile Mentors will only transport students of same sex

Time Commitment:   One or more shifts per week. One hour or more per shift (depending on location). M-F

Description/Purpose:  With over 350 men, women, and children daily seeking meals, resources, and shelter at KARM, it is important that our facility and surrounding area represent an atmosphere of care and cleanliness.  The Operation Make KARM Shine project assists in conveying hope, second chances, and love to our guests who call KARM home.   Your group would assist in cleaning inside and outside KARM with tasks such as: window washing, laundry, vacuuming, deep cleaning our program areas, and other tasks as needed.

Group Requirements:

Ages 13 and up. Children 13-17 must be accompanied by at least one adult.  (Depending upon the size and ages of the group, more adults may be requested to attend) Optimal group size is 15 or less; larger groups will be broken into multiple small groups  

Responsibilities:

Assist in completing the necessary monthly tasks to keep our home safe, clean, and beautiful for our guests.

Tasks may include, but are not limited to:

Dusting Floor cleaning Trash pick up Pressure washing Window washing Deep cleaning in dorms Painting Flower Beds

Responsibilities:
