Join us, and stand at Knoxville's front door to welcome new refugee families to our community!

Our mission is to provide opportunities for refugees to rebuild their lives after suffering persecution so that they may become productive, contributing members of the community. Bridge Refugee Services is expecting to welcome a record number of refugees to Knoxville this year, and we cannot do this without community support.

We would love to have volunteers help us welcome new refugee families at the McGhee Tyson Airport as they arrive. Volunteers will help us provide an enthusiastic welcome for our new families, help families with their baggage, and help us transport families and their baggage to the place they will be staying for their first night in Knoxville. You are welcome to make Welcome signs and bring balloons, but this is not required! This volunteer opportunity is very flexible with busy schedules. We have families that arrive in the mornings, during the day, in the evenings, and late at night. You can sign up for whatever arrival works best with your personal schedule.

Volunteer: Prepare a New Home for a Refugee Family

Do you have the gift of hospitality? Help us welcome our newest refugee neighbors to Knoxville!

Volunteers help us set-up a new home and create a welcoming space for an arriving refugee family seeking safety and peace in Knoxville. Our volunteers will help us move and place furniture, put linens on beds, hang shower curtains, put dishes in cabinets, and make an empty apartment or house look like a welcoming home for our weary travelers.

If you have a truck or a trailer and can help us move furniture from our storage unit to the new home, we would love to have your assistance! However, a truck or a trailer is not required to volunteer for this role.

One of our missions at Bridge Refugee Services is to provide safe, affordable, and furnished housing for our arriving refugee families.  We are largely dependent upon in-kind donations of gently used furniture from the community to set up a new home for our refugee families.  Sadly, we are missing out on a lot of donations because our organization is unable to do furniture pick-ups.

Volunteer: Gather Housing Supplies for Arriving Refugees

Bridge Refugee Services is expecting to welcome a record number of refugees to Knoxville this year, and we cannot do this without community support.  We are always looking to restock our supply of donations of household goods and furniture to provide material support for our refugee families arriving all year long.  

I would like to invite both individuals and groups to assist us through in-kind donation drives for household goods to help us in new home set-ups for our newest neighbors.  Pillows, bedding, fresh towels and washcloths, toiletries, laundry detergent, kitchen trash cans, dishes and cookware, cleaning supplies, school supplies--all are needed!

We are launching a brand-new initiative this year to create sustainability and efficiency in our donations process, and charitable groups can help us by donating various housing kits.  Your group can look through our brand new BRS Housing Kit Guide and pick a housing kit that speaks to your group, and then put together as many kits as you are able to.  We do accept some items as gently used, like dishes, flatware, pots, and pans; but other items like bedding, towels, toiletries, etc. would need to be new.

If you cannot commit to a whole kit, you can still donate any item(s) from this guide to support welcoming refugees to the Knoxville area!  Even if you wanted to just collect new pillows or umbrellas (or school supplies, which are not in the Housing Kit Guide), this would be a huge help!  Large groups collecting donations for us really help us meet the material needs of our refugee families.  If this is something you or your group would like to do, I can point you in the right direction as far as current needs go.

The program specialists are paid, part-time positions and we are in the process of filling 3 openings.

Age must be 21 or over (BSA Adult registration requires 21 for most positions) Reliable transportation required Work hours are generally between 3pm and 8pm and variety of days. Pay is hourly up to 25 hours per week. Generally, the candidate will work 10-15 hours per week depending on the number of sites assigned Scouting experience preferred, but not required. Knowledge/Fluency in a foreign language (including sign language) is a benefit, but not required BSA uniform provided (Guidelines to be discussed with District Director) Adult application and Criminal Background check required prior to start of employment. Volunteer: Lawn Care Assistance for Refugees

One of our roles as Knoxville's only refugee resettlement agency is to find affordable housing for our arriving refugee families. This task comes with unique challenges. One of these unique challenges is the rental agreements and city ordinances that require our refugee families to take care of the yard of their rental property.

We receive a lot of refugee families--many of whom are single mother with young children--who:

Have no cultural knowledge of how to use a lawn mower or do yard work, Do not have the necessary equipment to do yard work, and Have young children and cannot leave these children alone to get out in the yard for an hour or so to do the yard work.

There are opportunities in the Spring, Summer, and early Fall months for volunteers to help us meet the yard work needs of our refugee families and single mothers. This is also a great opportunity for groups that can serve refugee families through cutting grass, pulling weeds, raking leaves, and general yard clean-up.

Special Requirement: The volunteer would need to be able to provide their own lawn equipment and get it to and from the property, since the families do not own any equipment.

We are looking for volunteer Swahili interpreters to support our budding G.R.O.W. gardening program for refugees!

G.R.O.W. stands for Growing Refugee Opportunity and Wealth, and it is a community-driven Bridge Refugee Services initiative centered on fostering sustained self-sufficiency through culturally informed vocational training, wellness education, and entrepreneurial opportunities.  We are expanding this program in partnership with the Knox Co. Community Gardens & Growers Alliance to provide gardening plots and tools; teach gardening skills; and provide the appropriate entrepreneurial instruction to navigate the local farmer’s markets.

We would love to use your valuable language knowledge to serve our local refugee population as a volunteer interpreter for these gardening classes and entrepreneurial instruction.

The Child Advocacy Center in Lenoir City is looking for individuals who have a heart for helping children.  We are an organization that provides assistance to children and families who have been impacted by abuse.  We provide counseling, forensic interviews, resources and support.  Duties may include answering phones and providing support to clients, occupying children during appointments, assisting with fundraisers, assisting with mailouts and clerical duties.  Volunteers must be 21 years of age and complete a background check and fingerprinting before becoming eligible.  Help us to "Heal the pain of child abuse."

Purpose/Overview:  KARM is focused on providing multiple opportunities for our guests to obtain their goals related to movement out of homelessness and away from the events that brought them to KARM.  Many of our programs are designed with courses of study to assist in this process.  Elective classes are designed to allow the New Life men time to unwind and learn about healthy and fun activities outside of KARM’s doors.

Responsibilities:

Group Requirements:

Ages 13 and up. Children 13-17 must be accompanied by at least one adult.  (Depending upon the size and ages of the group, more adults may be requested to attend) Optimal group size is 15 or less; larger groups will be broken into multiple small groups

Assist in completing the necessary monthly tasks to keep our home safe, clean, and beautiful for our guests.

Samaritan Place provides shelter and support for seniors in crisis. It is one of a handful of such programs in the United States where a complete continuum of care from emergency to independent housing, is offered for this population. Because homelessness issues are different for seniors than for their younger counterparts, Samaritan Place provides not only shelter and nourishment, but intensive case management focused on that population’s unique needs.

Samaritan Place offers emergency,  transitional, and permanent housing services, which allow the guest and his/her case worker the time needed for appropriate evaluation and arrangement of the best possible living situation and supportive services. We are looking for volunteers to ride along with our Food Rescue Staff Members.

Our Food Rescue Drivers are responsible for safely and efficiently picking up donated products from various donors such as, grocery stores, restaurants, farmers, caterers, etc. Donated products are delivered to partner agencies (food pantries, shelters, senior and disabled housing facilities, etc.,) or brought back to Second Harvest Food Bank for distribution. Food Rescue Drivers and volunteers are required to positively act as an ambassador for Second Harvest Food Bank to maintain and build donor relationships, agency partnerships, and community support.

We are looking for Veterans that have the time to make visits, calls, write letters, send cards, run errands, provide respite, etc. Their families need your support too.

Volunteer: Gardening and Grounds Beautification

With 7.5 acres of greenspace atop Mabry's Hill and a single staff member, volunteers provide vital in maintaining and beautifying our historic site. Mabry-Hazen House sits at the center of a level 1 arboretum, and green thumbs are necessary to take care of the diverse flora. There are two primary opportunities to volunteer with our grounds: 

Groundskeeping - Tasks like bed care, grounds maintenance, bush pruning and weeding are typical. This year we aim to expand the accessibility of natural resources because we have been included on the Dogwood Arts’s Trail. The major project of reclaiming the dogwood grove on the east end of the property will require the help of our groundskeeping volunteers, and will involve brush removal among other tasks. We also have numerous flower beds around the site and  Gardening - During the Spring and Summer month, Mabry-Hazen House cultivates a kitchen garden of herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, and other vegetables. Volunteers may help maintain and care for the garden as well as grow their own plants.

Are you a compassionate and caring person? 
We are looking for you!  Caris provides hospice care throughout TN.  The end of life can be a difficult and lonely time for patients and/or their loved ones.  Volunteers can provide additional support to them at this very difficult time.  We have also learned that veterans have unique needs at the end of life that only another veteran will understand. 

Volunteers provide companionship to patients who are located in nursing facilities, assisted living, and homes.  It may be reading, listening to music or playing bingo with a patient.  Often patients in centers do not have many visitors and enjoy having additional company.  For home patients, volunteers provide respite for caregivers so they can go shopping, pick up medicines, or just have a meal with a friend. 

Volunteers do not do any hands-on care (no moving patient from a bed to a chair, taking to the bathroom, etc.).  Caris pays for patient volunteers to have a two-step TB test, drug test, and background checks.  Training starts with a two hour orientation and finishes with computer training that can be completed either at home, our office, or your local library.
