 Knoxville-Knox County CAC’s (Community Action Committee) Volunteer Assisted Transportation (VAT) program is seeking volunteer drivers to assist seniors and people with disabilities to medical appointments, shopping trips, beauty appointments, and other fun activities!

During the fall and winter months our regular scheduled volunteers are not available due to travelling and vacations. We are always seeking volunteers, and this is a time that we will need more volunteers to cover our needs. We provide the vehicle to use and supply the gas. You just pick and choose how often you want to volunteer. 

We are celebrating 16 years of serving the community and what a way to help someone, by getting them to the grocery store to access fresh food and also making sure they get to much needed medical appointments. We even can provide social trips to the senior center or the beauty salon.

Volunteers are needed for weekdays, evenings and weekends. Drivers must be 21 years of age and have at least 3 years of driving experience.

This is a committee of Belle Morris caregivers and parents that work to support our school through advocacy, service, and fundraising. They contribute towards the school partnership/leadership, student incentives and experiences, and staff support. 

Great Starts is a structured living program that offers integrated substance and mental health treatment services to recovering pregnant and parenting women.  The program utilizes evidence-based practices for co-occurring treatment.  The program's goal is to strengthen the mother-child bond through comprehensive services for mothers and specialized care for their children.  Volunteers will lead classes that teach women specialty & life skills. Examples include nutrition, cooking, crochet, GED tutoring, etc. Classes taught will be based on volunteers expertise.

This opportunity is weekday mornings, with frequency subject to volunteer schedule.

GMA needs 5 volunteers to come and organize clothing and hygiene donations that we have received. Ideally during the school day, but I would be happy to set up times with volunteers to come to help after school or on a Saturday.

TN TeenLine is looking for compassionate volunteers to support Tennessee adolescents via text. Volunteers respond to text messages from teens and young adults seeking support with emotional distress, relationship issues, mental health struggles, bullying, and more.

Ideal candidates are skilled in active listening, able to type clearly and quickly, and have some familiarity with mental health or emotional wellbeing. Volunteers must complete our free training program and commit to two 4 hour shift per month. Your empathy could make all the difference to local teens.

Reading Team volunteers assist us in mentally engaging our animals. This helps them to become more adoptable while living in a shelter environment! When working with the animals in the reading team, you will not be handling them physically, but will instead be challenging them to listen to your words. Beaumont Magnet Academy provides weekly food bags for students who need food support over the weekends.  These bags contain easy to make food and snacks, as well as fresh produce ensuring that kids have food when school is not in session.  Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church packs the nonperishable items from Second Harvest for us.  Beardsley Farm and the Rotary Club of Knoxville add the fresh produce to the bags 1-2 times a month.

To make this process work, we need help!  We need volunteers to transport our food bags from Glen Oak Missionary Baptist Church to Beaumont Magnet Academy or to Beardsley Farm on the weeks they will be adding produce.

Volunteers will pick up the food bags in the morning and drop them off at BMA or Beardsley Farm depending on the week.  We usually have approximately 100 to 130 bags.  Rolling bins are available to move items to and from your vehicle at each location.  

I will reach out to you to let you know if you will be delivering to the school or to Beardsley Farm.  Dates for Beardsley Farm will be confirmed by beginning of September.  First Beardsley Farm date is 9/18.

Community Educators are volunteer public speakers and community builders who help the Alzheimer's Association raise awareness, provide education, and expand the reach of educational offerings in the community. These volunteers deliver presentations using prepared training materials on topics related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. 

Special Events Volunteers with the Alzheimer’s Association play a key role in creating impactful community experiences. To meet our mission, we use chain-link fence panels to put up a 800 SF enclosure for a chained dog.  The dog also gets a shade canopy and sometimes we install chicken wire at the bottom if the dog is a digger.  

Builds are usually on Saturday mornings and last 2 -3 hours.  We advise everyone on our volunteer list when we schedule a build and if you're able to help, you join us.  We are a fun group and the reward is amazing when we're able to witness the dog get off the chain for the first time - freedom and the ability to run and jump.

Caris provides hospice care throughout TN. 

End of life can be a difficult and lonely time for patients and/or their loved ones.  Volunteers can provide additional support and friendship during.  

Patient Volunteers provide companionship to patients who are located in nursing facilities, assisted living, and private homes.  It may be reading, listening to music or playing bingo with a patient.  Often patients in centers do not have many visitors and enjoy having additional company.  For home patients, volunteers provide respite for caregivers so they can go shopping, pick up medicines, or just have a meal with a friend during this challenging time. 

Volunteers do not perform any hands-on care (no moving patient from a bed to a chair, taking to the bathroom, etc.).  Caris will cover the fees for patient volunteers to have a two-step TB test and background checks. Volunteering starts with a volunteer application and in-person orientation, completed with short computer training that can be completed either at home, our office or your local library.

WDVX needs volunteers to help chart demographic data at our daily Blue Plate Special live radio show.

The show is held M-Sat at noon in downtown Knoxville at the WDVX Blue Plate Special stage inside Visit Knoxville. On Fridays, we host the Big Plate at Barley's. 

We are looking for volunteers to come to the Blue Plate and engage with the audience to gather demographic data on the makeup of the audience and where people are traveling from to attend our live events. Typically, a volunteer would claim a specific day of the week and come every week on that day to volunteer. We currently have open needs on Tuesdays, Fridays, & Saturdays. You would be surrounded by lovers of live music in our audience and have the opportunity to interact with musical guests and WDVX personnel.

Mentoring is a critical component of Girl Talk, Inc., so we must select excellent mentors—individuals with leadership and mentoring experience, who are serious and passionate about Girl Talk’s mission. Our mentors are the hands and feet of Girl Talk, Inc. and have the most important job of all.

Girls in 6th – 12th grade from all over the city of Knoxville can apply to receive one to one mentoring.  Each girl is matched with a caring adult woman who will give her the additional support that she needs to get through life’s challenges and transitions.

Our 1:1 Mentors are there to give our girls hope, encouragement, love, support, and confidence.  Our mentors meet with their girls at least once a month to go on mentoring outings that cultivates the relationship and provide girls with a safe space to just be in such a chaotic and demanding world.

Girl Talk collaborates with the Knoxville Education Foundation (formerly known as the Great Schools Partnership Community Schools Initiative), Knox County Schools, and Community Organizations to provide group mentoring services to 3rd – 5th grade girls after school. Through curriculum-based learning objectives and group mentoring, we assist in building girls’ confidence and self-esteem, preventing teen pregnancy, and increasing the likelihood of educational advancement.

Each semester, girls participate in 10-weekly group sessions facilitated by trained Girl Talk mentors. These sessions teach the girls healthy coping skills, offer a safe space to process their daily lives and feelings, and the opportunity to build a positive peer community.

Our school and site based mentors meet for one hour a week with a group of girls during an after school program. We are looking for women who are passionate about the young girls in our community and who are hoping to make a difference through mentorship.

Bridge Refugee Services is searching for committed volunteers who love working with people and are interested in helping another person start or continue learning English.

As a refugee resettlement agency, Bridge helps refugees start a new life in the United States. English/ESL volunteers are a wonderful one-on-one resource for people as they begin this journey.

Being able to speak English is crucial for refugees as they start their first job and learn about their new community.

Even if you have never taught English, this is a great opportunity to work with an individual or family as they improve their English skills.  Bridge can offer an opportunity for instruction in cross-cultural ESL and free ESL materials for teachers.

Community members practice their reading skills by reading to animals, and in turn, the animals experience the power of the human-animal bond and become more adoptable through socialization.

CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates. These advocates are specially trained volunteers represent the best interests of children in juvenile abuse and neglect court cases. CASA of the Tennessee Heartland is a local, nonprofit organization dedicated to the service of abused and neglected children in Anderson and Blount Counties.

CASA of the Tennessee Heartland is also looking for volunteers to serve in a non-advocate capacity. This opportunity is for those who are interested in volunteering with CASA but feel that advocacy is not their preferred form of service, or that they do not have time to be an advocate. While advocate volunteers and non-advocate volunteers take on different roles and responsibilities, they all work toward the same goal of serving Anderson and Blount County children.

Volunteers who are interested in helping with fundraising, appreciation events, office/administrative tasks, and community engagement are encouraged to apply.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and submit to background checks to be considered.

CASA is looking for volunteers able to commit to at least one year of service as Court Appointed Special Advocates. The 30 hour training and 3 hours of court observation prepare future CASAs for their role as advocates for children in abuse and neglect cases in Juvenile Court. CASA volunteers are everyday citizens that judges appoint to advocate for the safety and well-being of children who have been removed from their homes due to parental abuse and neglect. They stand up for these children and change their lives. CASA volunteers listen first. Then they act. Volunteers get to know the child and talk with everyone in that child’s life—parents and relatives, foster parents, teachers, medical professionals, attorneys, social workers and others. They use the information they gather to inform judges and others of what the child needs and what will be the best permanent home for them. Being a CASA volunteer does not require any special education or background, just a heart for children and a willingness to speak out and represent their best interests.

You must be 21 or over, pass background checks, participate in a 33-hour pre-service training course and agree to stay with a case until it is closed (a year and a half on average).
