Volunteer: Volunteer to Help Count People Experiencing Homelessness – Point-in-Time Outreach Survey

Help ensure every neighbor is counted.

The annual Point-in-Time (PIT) Count helps Knoxville-Knox County understand how many people are experiencing homelessness on a single night, including individuals staying outdoors or in places not meant for human habitation. Your participation ensures every person has the chance to be included in the count.

This volunteer role supports the direct outreach survey, which takes place over several days so that teams can cover as much of the county as possible. Volunteers will always be paired with an experienced outreach team lead who handles planning, supports safety, and serves as your point of contact throughout the shift.

What Volunteers Do

Walk outdoors with your team lead to known or likely locations where unsheltered neighbors may be staying.

Offer the survey, share provided incentives, and help ensure each person has the opportunity to be counted.

Follow your team lead’s guidance for safety, transportation, and approach.

Training

All volunteers must complete one online training session, available on multiple dates mid-December through mid-January. Training covers safety, survey administration, and expectations for the day.

Requirements & Conditions

Ages 18–99

Not family-friendly (due to field conditions)

Outdoors, requires walking in cold and uneven terrain

Not wheelchair accessible

Must provide phone number and emergency contact

Inclement Weather

Cold, rain, and winter conditions are common during PIT Count.

Dress in warm, weather-ready layers and sturdy boots.

Bring a small backpack with water and any personal gear you need.

You will receive confirmation at least 24 hours in advance about your shift.

If weather presents too great a challenge, discuss options with your team lead.

Outreach teams will be supplied with incentives to distribute during the count.

Why Volunteer?

Your participation helps Knoxville–Knox County understand local needs, improve services, and strengthen our community’s response to homelessness. A few hours of your time can make a meaningful difference

Volunteer: Vine Middle: Basketball Concession Volunteers (multiple opportunities!)

The Vine Volunteer Collective is looking for a few volunteers to help make our home basketball games a success this season! Come be part of the fun, high-energy atmosphere at Vine Middle Magnet School as we cheer on our student athletes. We’re looking for 3–4 volunteers per game to help run our concession stand — serving snacks, drinks, and plenty of school spirit!

Your help means our staff and administrators can enjoy the game with students and families instead of working behind the counter. Whether you come solo, with friends, or as a small group, this is a great way to get involved and support the Vine community!

*** Because these shifts are essential to running the game, please only sign up if you’re confident you can attend. A last-minute cancellation or no-show can leave the team short-handed and put extra strain on staff, so reliability really matters for this one.

Volunteer: Red Kettle Volunteer Ambassador

Help Bring Hope to Knoxville This Christmas Season!

The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is one of the most iconic holiday traditions in America—and one of the most important. Every dollar placed in a red kettle stays here in our community, providing shelter, food, emergency assistance, and life-changing support for families and individuals in need.

Behind every successful kettle season is a team of dedicated volunteer bell ringers—and that’s where you come in.

Position Overview

We are looking for a friendly, motivated Red Kettle Volunteer Ambassador to help us recruit the volunteer bell ringers who make the Red Kettle Campaign possible. This role directly fuels our mission and allows us to serve more families during the most critical time of the year.

What You’ll Do

Make warm, friendly outreach calls and emails to past volunteers Call companies, churches, service clubs, and other organizations to invite them to take a kettle shift Share ideas and help brainstorm ways to increase volunteer engagement Represent The Salvation Army with kindness, professionalism, and a heart for service

Skills We’re Looking For

Strong verbal and written communication Friendly, patient, people-oriented personality Basic computer skills (website navigation, simple spreadsheets) Strategic and logical thinking A genuine desire to help The Salvation Army support our neighbors in need

Time Commitment

Totally flexible!

Whether you have a few hours a week or could help more regularly, we welcome your involvement. Even a short weekly commitment can lead to multiple volunteer sign-ups and make a huge impact.

We’d love to have someone try this role for a couple of weeks in December. After that, if you enjoy the work, there are opportunities to continue supporting our volunteer program year-round—or you can remain a seasonal volunteer. Both are wonderful!

Why This Role Matters

Every bell ringer you recruit helps raise funds that provide shelter, meals, toys at Christmas, and year-round support for families in crisis. Your calls don’t just fill volunteer slots—they change lives.

If you love connecting with people, want to make a real difference this holiday season, and enjoy being part of something meaningful, this could be the role for you!

Want more information? Contact Tracy Weber at tracy.weber@uss.salvationarmy.org or by phone at 865-971-4920.

We need your help to keep great books accessible to communities 24/7. Visit Little Free Libraries in your community to distribute books!

Volunteer: Food Pantry Coordinator at the Salvation Army

Help Feed Hope in Your Community!
The Salvation Army is seeking dedicated volunteers to join a small leadership team helping manage our Emergency Assistance Food Pantry. This pantry provides essential food support to individuals and families in need who have been prequalified for assistance.

About the Role:
As part of the Food Pantry Management Team, you’ll help ensure our pantry operates smoothly and efficiently. Responsibilities include:

Monitoring and maintaining pantry stock — tracking inventory, checking expiration dates, and helping place food orders as needed.

Scheduling and supporting volunteers — organizing the volunteer schedule and providing guidance to those assisting during pantry hours (recruitment handled by The Salvation Army).

Coordinating pantry operations — greeting clients alongside volunteers and ensuring a welcoming, organized environment.

Supporting community food drives — optionally helping organize or assist with food drives to bolster pantry stock and promote community engagement.

Our goal is to open the pantry once or twice each week, offering consistent access to food support for our neighbors. While this is a leadership role, you do not need to be present every time the pantry is open—we’ll work together as a team to share responsibilities and schedules.

Ideal Volunteer:
We’re looking for someone who is:

Organized and dependable

Comfortable leading small groups of volunteers

Compassionate and respectful toward all people

Able to commit a few hours per week (schedule is flexible)

Why It Matters:
Every can, every box, every act of kindness helps feed hope for families in our community. By volunteering your time and leadership, you’ll help ensure that no neighbor goes hungry.

Interested?
To learn more or express interest, contact Tracy Weber at tracy.weber@uss.salvationarmy.org or call 865-971-4920.

Together, we can Feed Hope and Share Love in our community.

Train 4 Life Volunteer Info:

Volunteers assist head coaches and athletes during weekly workouts. You can sign up for any individual sessions you’re available to attend.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

Set up and break down of fitness stations

Support the flow of workout stations

Assist coaches with counting and tracking reps

Cheer on and encourage athletes throughout the session

No experience is needed, just bring your energy and enthusiasm!

What to Know Before You Arrive:

Please arrive 5 minutes early and check in with the lead coach

Wear athletic attire and closed-toe shoes (you’ll be on your feet)

Bring a filled water bottle to stay hydrated

Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or chaperone. Please contact the event coordinator to get them registered.

We are so excited you will be volunteering with the athletes alongside their fitness and health journey!

If you’re interested, please sign up and our Volunteer Engagement Team will follow up with more details on how to register for specific events.

Volunteer: Fundraising Support Volunteer

I'm great at running my organization. But when it comes to fundraising, I'm not the best. We are looking for someone who is interested in takin the lead on this and help our organization raise money. Resilience Wellness Association is a 501(c)(3) that I started in 2022 to provide access to mental health services such as therapy and counseling. Our organization has grown thanks to receiving some grants, but we really lack funding from donations. We are looking for someone who would be interested in raising money for us through social media promotions and connecting with businesses.

Volunteer: Organize Holiday Gifts for Homebound Seniors

While the holidays are considered a time to come together, many homebound and socially isolated older adults are unable to gather with loved ones to celebrate the season. Each year, Mobile Meals volunteers dedicate their Christmas morning to delivering nutritious meals and warm holiday greetings to homebound seniors across Knox County. In addition to a meal, each senior receives a holiday gift bag generously donated by you and other friends in the community. For many, this may be their only visitor that day.

We are recruiting volunteer groups to help organize donated gifts between Dec 16-19. If you have a group interested in volunteering, reach out to sara.keel@cacnutrition.org.

Tasks will vary from day to day. Please reach out for more information!

Volunteer: Newport Christmas Parade "Lights, Camera, Christmas!"

Newport Christmas Parade – Volunteer with Us!

The Cocke County Partnership is proud to host the 2025 Newport Christmas Parade on Friday, December 5th, starting at 6:30 p.m.! This beloved hometown tradition draws more than 10,000 spectators to Downtown Newport each year for a magical evening filled with lighted floats, marching bands, tractors, horses, and of course—Santa Claus!

The parade kicks off at Debbie’s Drive-In and travels through the heart of downtown before wrapping up at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church. You’ll see floats beautifully decorated by local businesses, schools, and community groups—all spreading that small-town Christmas cheer we love so much.

We need your help to make it happen!
Volunteers are a huge part of what makes this event successful. We’re looking for friendly helpers to:

Assist with float line-up and staging

Help keep the parade route organized and moving

Serve as judges for entries

And more behind-the-scenes roles that make the magic happen!

If you love the holidays, community spirit, and festive fun, we’d love to have you on our volunteer team. Come be part of one of Newport’s favorite traditions!

Volunteer: Santa 7s Rugby Tournament (afternoon)

Hello!

We, here at Knoxville Rugby, would like to invite you to participate in what we consider THE event of the season!

Santa 7s is the most inclusive rugby event that takes place in the Southeast, maybe even the entire country! Every year this event grows larger and larger and with that, we have more and more work to do. The volunteer positions will vary from things like parking assistance, field clean-up, score-keeping, administrative duties, etc. You can expect a volunteer shift full of entertaining sports, showmanship, and camaraderie!

All proceeds from the event go to growing the game of rugby in east TN, from kindergarteners to our oldest active member at 62yo!

Volunteers will have access to refreshments, will be sent home with "goodies" , and can expect their volunteer hours to be signed off hastily!
