Help Create a Welcoming First Step Toward Care and Stability
The Salvation Army of Knoxville is preparing to open a Community Care Hub in its vacant building located on its campus on North Broadway St. This is a new initiative designed bring together service providers and community agencies that will work together to connect individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability with healthcare and other vital community resources.
We are seeking dependable volunteers to serve as the first point of contact for guests visiting the center. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys meeting people, has a welcoming personality, and believes every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
What You'll Do
- Welcome guests as they arrive
- Help visitors sign in and complete a simple check-in process
- Provide basic information about available services
- Direct guests to the appropriate providers or resources
- Help maintain an orderly and welcoming environment
- Monitor the flow of visitors and help ensure the facility remains safe and comfortable for everyone
- Communicate with staff or service providers if concerns arise
What We're Looking For
- A friendly, patient, and professional demeanor
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- A patient and welcoming demeanor, with the ability to interact respectfully with people in a wide range of circumstances.
- Comfort interacting with individuals from diverse backgrounds and life experiences
- Dependability and a willingness to serve others
- Ability to follow established procedures and maintain appropriate boundaries
Many people who enjoy this type of volunteer work come from backgrounds such as education, healthcare, social services, ministry, public service, or customer service. However, no specific professional experience is required—just a welcoming attitude, patience, and a desire to help others.
Time Commitment
The pilot phase of the Community Care Hub will initially operate Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. beginning in late July, with the possibility of an additional day each week. Volunteers may serve weekly, bi-weekly, or on a schedule that works for them.
Why This Matters
For many guests, the person who greets them at the door sets the tone for their entire experience. A welcoming smile, a calm presence, and a few moments of kindness can help someone take an important step toward healthcare, recovery, housing, and greater stability.
By serving in this volunteer role, you'll help create a place where people feel respected, supported, and connected to resources that can change lives.
