A Second Harvest Food Bank driver will deliver and unload 3 to 6 pallets of product to Summit Towers, a senior and disabled housing facility in Downtown Knoxville every other Wednesday. The pallets of food will usually consist of dry goods, produce, dairy, bread, etc.
We need volunteers to help with the following:
- Set up 5 or so tables in the community room of Summit Towers.
- When the driver arrives he brings the pallets of food with a pallet jack and sits the pallets outside of the community room.
- The volunteers will take the food off the pallets and carry them into the community room and out of the boxes and place it on the tables in sections (produce section, dairy section, dry goods section, etc.). Depending on the mix of DONATED products.
- Once the food is separated, volunteers will make boxes for residents with so many items from each section of food.
The Summit Towers staff person, Tracy Bailey, will be there to help and to determine how much of each section each resident will be allowed to take.
Typically, around 75 or so seniors and disabled residents of Summit Towers will be there to pick up boxes.
- During distribution, the volunteers will assist residents with picking up their boxes.
- Once distribution is complete, throw away trash, clean up the area, and put the room back in order.
Anyone interested in volunteering can earn a $ 1.00 credit per hour, per person, for ANY Second Harvest Food Bank partner Agency of their choice. The maximum amount of credit per Agency is $100.00 per month. All credits will be applied to the agency’s account on a quarterly basis.
