Description:
The Knox County District Attorney General’s Office is bringing Do the Write Thing to Knox County! Do the Write Thing is writing challenge for middle school students to examine how violence has impacted their life. Students across the nation participate by making a commitment not to be involved in violence and to write an essay. The students must answer three questions in their essays:
- How has violence affected my life?
- What are the causes of youth violence?
- What can I do to reduce youth violence?
Two ambassadors will be selected from Knox County to attend a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C. in the summer. Additionally, Do the Write Thing publishes and places a book containing the writings of all the national ambassadors in the Library of Congress.
For many students, it is the first time that they have expressed themselves about how violence impacts them. Writing can be a cathartic and therapeutic experience. Our young students have experiences, thoughts, and insights that they want to share. They want to be listened to and through writing, we can be invited into their world. Do the Write Thing gives student’s a platform to express how violence has impacted them and the ear of our community’s most influential leaders.
Volunteer Duties:
Please join us in listening to our student’s experiences and ideas! We need volunteers to review and score essays to select our ambassadors and to gather important insights for our community.
Volunteers will virtually review and score up to 10 essays between April 1-7. Training and instructions will be provided and accessible on demand.
